April 15th: For 360 million Americans, it marks Tax Day. For Peninsula Family Service (PFS), it marked a milestone.

This year, PFS proudly completed its first season as a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site, offering free, expert tax preparation services to qualifying residents in San Mateo. Thanks to our dedicated, trained team, 70 individuals accessed all eligible state and federal tax benefits, maximizing refunds and boosting financial security.

Carlos Aguirre, PFS’s Financial Literacy Manager, was recently featured in the San Francisco Chronicle and on KPIX 5, offering timely advice on personal finance in today’s shifting economy. “In most cases, for most people, the best thing you can do is stay the course with your 401(k),” said Aguirre. He also recommends reviewing your W-4 withholding to keep more of your paycheck throughout the year, rather than giving the government an interest-free loan. The tax program was so popular, the PFS team plans to offer it again next year.

VITA is one of many programs PFS offers to prioritize the financial well-being of our community. Our no-cost Financial Education workshops cover essential topics like budgeting, credit building, and money management. We also provide practical tools such as prepaid debit cards and our innovative Lending Circles—a community-based approach where members contribute monthly ($50–$200) and take turns receiving a no-interest loan.

In these uncertain economic times, these PFS programs have been vital to the community. One recent participant proudly shared:

“I had a 100-point increase in my credit score thanks to consistent, on-time payments. I haven’t missed a single payment since taking control of my finances after my divorce—I’m so proud of that!”

And it’s not just adults we’re supporting. A year after launching, our Youth Financial Workshops have become a trusted resource for teens and young adults. This 6-week program equips them with the tools to navigate financial adulthood with confidence. After helping dozens of young participants, we’re excited to welcome a new cohort this summer.

As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, PFS remains dedicated to strengthening our communities and ensuring we remain a vital partner for the next 75 years and beyond.
